Health Tip: Understanding Osteoporosis in Men

(HealthDay News) -- While women may be more focused on bone health, men are also at risk for osteoporosis, a disease characterized by brittle bones and bone loss.


The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains these risk factors for osteoporosis in men:



  • Being over age 75.

  • Having a low body-mass index.

  • Having lost more than 5 percent of total body weight in the last four years.

  • Being a current smoker.

  • Living a sedentary lifestyle.

  • Having a male family member with osteoporosis.
