Smartphone Helps Diagnose Woman With Mini-Stroke


In April, Stacey Yepes suddenly found herself having trouble speaking and unable to move her face muscles. Thinking she was having a stroke, she went to the hospital, where she was told she was just suffering from stress. Two days later, while driving, she began suffering from numbness. She pulled over and took a video of her symptoms.


"I think it was just to show somebody, because I knew it was not stress-related," Yepes told CBC News. "And I thought if I could show somebody what was happening, they would have a better understanding."



She showed her video to the doctor, who diagnosed her as having had a mini-stroke from a buildup of plaque in the arteries, known as arthrosclerosis, which an MRI confirmed. She is expected to make a full recovery, and has made several lifestyle changes to reduce her risk of stroke in the future, including eating better and exercising.
